2.Fine Tuning Your English Pronunciation no.1
Fine Tuning Your English Pronunciation
Before I begin, let me tell you two very important things to remember when learning English; first of all, especially in America, not everybody pronounces everything the same exact way. It’s confusing but, depending on which part of the country you’re from, then you’re going to pronounce things differently. Secondly, pronunciation is different from accent. It’s important to hone your English skills to make yourself understandable, but please don’t aim to take away an accent, it’s part of who you are and where you come from, and that’s important.
So now that i’ve said that, i think i can narrow it down to three practices that will make your pronunciation easier for native English speakers to understand.
1.End with -eh instead of -oh
When i hear Japanese speak English, the most common difficulty in pronunciation is how they end their words. For example, let’s look at love, pet, and hotel. In Japanese English or Engrish as i’ve heard it called, love sounds like la-vu. There’s an extra emphasis on the end of the word, and the extra sound becomes noticeable. Now think of pet, in Japanese it’s pet-to, again the end of the word is really noticeable. Again for hotel, in Japanese it’s ho-te-ru. There’s an emphasis on the sound at the end of the word.
In English we tend to end our words with little to no emphasis on the ending sound. But I think if you listen closely you can use tools in Japanese to make the pronunciation easier. Try adding an -eh to the end of the word instead of -oh or -u. The sound tends to be shorter and quieter. Try it out with
Love
Pet
Hotel
